Thanksgiving
This week is Thanksgiving, a great holiday by all accounts. Food, family, gratitude, food, autumnal decorations, freshly baked rolls, cranberry sauce. We couldn't miss the opportunity to celebrate the holiday despite the lack of some of the essentials. We decided to host the meal in our large, but sparsely furnished apartment. Accommodating the nearly 15 guests we had invited required some pooling of resources. Three large desks, two dining room tables, 23 small spoons from Graham and Anna ("we bought way too many small spoons on accident"), 6 spoons and 6 forks from Alison ("I need them all back"), 6 forks from Lydia ("I need those back"), and 12 stools to be exact. Anna did an amazing job making decorations. She painted lots and lots of leaves with an autumnal theme (I'll pretend I didn't see the pot leaves mixed in). She also made some wall hanging that made it possible for us all to share things we are grateful for. Some of the submissions were expected: my husband, my wife, internet, peanut butter (Scott obviously). Some were less so: Bacon and Ice cream together, ugly boots, Kuanish (the guy at school who helps us with apartment issues), the awesome dress recommendation. And of course we had some hand turkeys on display as the quintessential Thanksgiving decor.
The food was plentiful and delicious. The company was fun and diverse. The conversation was interesting and positive (mostly). Graham was charged with giving "the" Thanksgiving speech. Since this was a first for many of our guests we felt it was important to tell them the story/history of Thanksgiving. Well maybe not the whole story, just the happy bits. Graham pulled out the stops by sporting a pilgrim hat, made by Anna, and reading a speech he wrote written is the style of Star Wars. It began, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... " So clever.
And in the spirit of Thanksgiving good will we ended the evening with an apple cobbler competition. Graham and I, head to head. I won, despite what the crowd may have said.
And that was Thanksgiving. A great night of eating, laughing, and enjoyment as it should be. We really couldn't have pulled it off without all the major help from all the people on our hall. I really do have so much to be grateful for.
